Student Code of Conduct & Disciplinary Procedure

Expected Standards of Conduct

BIT students must:

  • Treat others with respect, including staff, peers, and visitors.

  • Communicate professionally in class and online spaces.

  • Follow all academic integrity requirements (no plagiarism, collusion, impersonation, or misuse of AI tools).

  • Use BIT facilities, IT systems, makerspace and equipment safely and responsibly.

  • Follow health & safety instructions, including evacuation procedures.

  • Refrain from harassment, bullying, discrimination, threats, or disruptive behaviour.Misconduct Categories

Misconduct includes (but is not limited to):

  • Academic misconduct (plagiarism, cheating, collusion, falsifying work).

  • Behavioural misconduct (abuse, harassment, intimidation, disruption).

  • IT/facilities misconduct (damage, unsafe use, unauthorised access, misuse of Discord or portal).

  • Repeated non-compliance with attendance and engagement expectations.

Disciplinary Process

  1. Informal warning: tutor/Registrar discusses concern and issues written warning.

  2. Formal review: if repeated/serious, case is referred to the Assistant Director/DSL and Academic Head for investigation.

  3. Disciplinary panel: student meets an internal panel (Academic Head + Registrar + relevant faculty).

  4. Outcome: decision given in writing within 5 working days.

Possible Outcomes / Sanctions

  • Written warning

  • Behavioural/academic improvement plan

  • Restriction of access to specific facilities or programmes

  • Suspension from BIT local support

  • Termination of BIT support services (student remains registered with UoL but without BIT teaching support)

Right of Appeal

Students may appeal within 10 working days on grounds of:

  • procedural error;

  • new evidence; or

  • disproportional outcome.

Appeals are reviewed by the Academic Board Chair or nominee, and a final outcome is issued within 10 working days.
